Healthy Community

As Ward 9 City Councillor, one of my goals is to ensure that Edmontonians have increased access to recreational opportunities to lead healthy lives. As a physician, I know how important living an active healthy life is. As a community leader, I know the importance in creating opportunities for everyone to thrive and succeed. Healthy communities are vibrant communities. We need to prioritize our health through neighbourhood planning and development along with community engagement.

What Does Great Community Life Look Like?

I believe there are four basic elements to great community life: Home, School, Recreation, and Assembly. The combination of these elements make for vibrant and healthy communities. When you are thinking about who you are going to vote for to represent Ward 9, give some thought to the great potential each of our neighbourhoods have as we grow and develop this great city.

Community Engagement: Ward 9 Advisory Council

No doubt every Ward 9 candidate you’ve looked into mentions community engagement in their platforms and promises. The term is loaded with responsibility. It means whoever is elected as your City Councillor must maintain regular and open communication with their constituents. More importantly, it means listening to and asking community members questions before major decisions are made. Too often, the City “engages” with citizens to get the stamp of community feedback, but in reality major decisions have already been made. Not only do I promise to be different, I have a plan and previous experience to back up this promise.

You. Me. Us.

Earlier this week, David Staples of the Edmonton Journal was surprised to discover a rising number of people could actually be against public transit that upsets existing road infrastructure, increases traffic, requires years of construction inconvenience, and forces the city to go further into debt to support the cost of almost half a billion per mile to build.  In his September 21st article, David says "I never expected Edmontonians to turn against LRT expansion, but that’s what is starting to happen."
